Juniper (Junipus communis)
Common Juniper or Rocky Mountain Juniper. This densely branched small tree which is native to Europe, Asia and North America can reach 5 to 10 feet in height and about the same in width. When mature, Junipers are very sturdy, drought tolerant and well adapted to poor and rocky soil conditions, preferring full sun. The fruits, known as juniper berries are well known as the flavoring for Gin. Medicinally, juniper berries have been used for centuries for problems in the urinary system. Historically used as an effective remedy for chronic kidney and bladder infections as well as for gout and arthritis. The berries should only be used short term as long term use can irritate the urinary tract. Makes an excellent hedgerow and privacy screen. Hardy to zone 4.
