Chinese Medicine

Chinese Herbs - Chinese Leopard Flower

Traditional Chinese Medicine is an ancient healing system originating almost 4,500 years ago. It continues to be the most common healing system in China today despite the strong presence of Western Medicine.

Chinese Medicine has a very unique approach to it's study of the human body and the interrelationships of the various body systems. It is now practiced widely in North America in many forms including, acupuncture, acupressure, moxabustion, and dispensing of Chinese Herbal formulas. Many Western Herbalists are now incorporating Chinese Herbs into their formulas as well.

The demand for many of these Chinese Herb Plants is reaching an all time high, contributing to near extinction of certain plants wild crafted in China or other parts of Asia. Many Chinese Herbs are cultivated as well, which has inspired several North American growers to begin cultivating Chinese Herbs here in the US.

Many species of Chinese Herb Plants have botanical cousins (so to speak), that are native to North America, but those practicing traditional Chinese Medicine prefer to use the actual Chinese species, which will often thrive here if grown in a similar climate to its location in China.

There is much dispute among Herbalists as to the effectiveness of Chinese Herbs grown in North America. Some purists believe that these herbs have to be cultivated in China to be used effectively in Chinese herbal formulas. Certainly there is much to be learned from the Chinese about post-harvest preparation of these herbs to achieve maximum medicinal potency.

As Herb Gardeners, we have the opportunity to experiment with these herbs from China in our own gardens and use the plants we grow and determine their effectiveness on a personal level. Due to my own positive experiences using Traditional Chinese Herbs and acupuncture for my own healing, I began trying to grow many of the plants in the formulas I have taken over the years. This has resulted in a large collection of Chinese Herb species which we are able to offer our customers with more being propagated in the future.

If you are taking a Chinese Herbal formula or are curious and would like to add some beautiful botanical diversity to your herb garden, try growing some of these Chinese Cultivars we have available this season.
