Qin Jiao, Yellow Gentian. Another rare specimen from the Himalayas of Tibet and Western China. This hardy perennial has an attractive rosette of fleshy, slightly variegated leaves. The unusual tubular flowers, bluish or light greenish white in color, form at the top of a bare stem reaching 2 feet or so in full bloom.

The Tibetan Gentian has been used historically in Chinese medicine as well as Tibetan and Ayurvedic formulas. Gentian is a bitter herb commonly taken as a tea from the dried leaves to improve digestive and liver function. In TCM, it has been utilized in treatment of rheumatoid arthritis and as a nervine in small doses.

This extremely hardy and rare Gentian is easier than other types to grow in a garden setting. It prefers partial shade in very hot summer areas and enjoys a moist soil . Perennial. Zone 4.

Traditionally used in combination with Echinacea for colds and flu. Goldenseal is a very bitter anti -microbial herb. It is strong medicine and should not be used long term but is excellent especially when used in combination with other herbs for digestive disorders, peptic ulcers, excess mucus, sinusitis, excessive menstruation, and pelvic inflammatory disease. Not to be given to pregnant women or patients with high blood pressure. Goldenseal is a woodland herbaceous perennial. Organic cultivation of this plant should be a high priority. It has been severely overharvested in its natural habitat. Likes a shady moist location preferably under a canopy of hardwood trees, but any shade will work. Hardy to zone 4.

Originating from Southern Europe. A hardy bennial. It has naturalized in parts of the Northeastern US. Grecian Foxglove forms a lush, green rosette the first year and the next year sends up a 2 foot flowering stalk with striking little flowers that are almost orchid-like with little purple stripes on a creamy background. This is the foxglove that is widely used to produce the drug digitalis used to treat various ailments of the heart. The plant itself is toxic and should not be taken internally without the guidance of an experienced herbal practitioner and even then it is a very low dose Botanical. The Grecian Foxglove is hardy and takes very little care or water once established. A lovely flowering biennial which seems to thrive in full sun or partial shade. It is not fussy about the soil it is in and will self sow readily. Hardy. Biennial. To Zone 2.

Jacobs ladder. This plant is native to the temperate areas of Europe and is found naturalized near woodland streams and swamps. This hardy perennial reaches a height of up to 2 feet with cup shaped purplish flowers and foliage reminiscent of Valerian. It prefers a well drained site with partial shade. Cats find the scent of this plant extremely attractive and may cause damage in their enthusiasm. Historically, Greek Valerian was used in Ancient Greece for treating toothaches, animal bites, and dysentary. It was later used during the 19th Century for treatment of syphilis, headaches, fevers and epilepsy. More recently, the plant has been used for its scent in potpourri and can be boiled in olive oil for a black hair dye. It is often grown as an ornamental for its attractive flowers. Easy to grow and readily self sows. Hardy to zone 2.

Gypsywort actually blocks T3 production in the liver and interferes with iodine metabolism as well. Contraindicated for pregnant and nursing women, this herb should only be used under the guidance of an experienced herbalist. A robust plant with unusually textured leaves and square stems and will grow to 4 feet with small flowers blooming along the stem. Prefers a moist, sunny location. Give it plenty of room as it will spread by runners underground and create a large patch over time. Perennial. Hardy to Zone 4.
